Side Plate

What is Side Plate?

Side plates, also sometimes referred to as cheek plates, are critical wear parts within a jaw crusher’s crushing chamber. They are positioned on the interior sides of the crusher frame, directly opposite each other, forming the lateral walls of the crushing zone.

Their core function is to protect the main crusher frame from wear and abrasion caused by the rock material during the crushing process. As the movable jaw compresses material against the fixed jaw, smaller particles and debris constantly rub against the side walls. Without these sacrificial plates, the crusher’s main body would suffer rapid and costly damage.

Key Characteristics:

Material: Manufactured from high-strength, abrasion-resistant manganese steel or other durable alloys to withstand extreme impact and sliding abrasion.
Design: They are typically robust, flat or slightly curved plates bolted securely onto the crusher frame.
Role in Crushing Chamber: Along with the jaw dies (fixed and movable), they help contain and guide the material flow, contributing to the overall crushing efficiency and product size.
Side plates are wear parts and require periodic inspection and replacement. Their wear rate is generally lower than that of the jaw dies but is accelerated by abrasive feed material and improper crusher operation (e.g., feeding off-center).
Worn side plates can lead to:
Damage to the permanent crusher frame.
Potential loss of production efficiency.
Increased risk of material contamination from worn metal.
