Eccentric Shaft

What is Eccentric Shaft?

The eccentric shaft is a fundamental and critically important component in a jaw crusher, serving as the primary driving element that converts rotational motion into the reciprocating action necessary for crushing rock, ore, and other materials. Its design and integrity are paramount to the machine’s performance, efficiency, and operational lifespan.

Acting as the central “backbone” and driving axle of the crusher, the eccentric shaft’s primary function is to generate the precise elliptical motion of the movable jaw plate. Unlike a standard rotational shaft, it features an offset section—the eccentric throw—which is the mechanical heart of the crushing action. This throw is strategically located between two massive flywheels that store inertial energy, ensuring smooth operation under fluctuating load conditions.

The shaft is supported at both ends by heavy-duty bearings housed in the crusher frame. When powered by the motor and V-belt drive, the shaft rotates. Due to its offset eccentric section, the rotation creates an oscillating movement in the pitman (connecting rod) and the toggle plate system attached to it. This oscillation is transmitted directly to the movable jaw, causing it to alternately approach and retreat from the fixed jaw. This cycle compresses and fractures the material in the crushing chamber on the forward stroke (closing) and allows the crushed product to discharge by gravity on the return stroke (opening).
